"I've had comments like 'you're such a nice girl, why would you want to do boxing?' But you know, nice girls can do boxing as well so I wanted to combat that stereotype. I want to take empowerment of the people further and wherever I can"

For years, British mainstream media have pushed an Islamophobic narrative on front page newspapers, impacting the publics perception of those who follow the Islamic faith, bellowing out how Muslim men are a threat and women are oppressed.

"Islamophobia seems to be the last respectable prejudice available in modern Britain"

 

Boxsmart is a small exploration of boxer Zahra Butt, a female boxing coach who runs classes at the Nottingham Women's centre. This documentation is a small segment of her life to show her activism against the stereotypes placed on her and the inspiration she's become to others. I wanted to celebrate her triumphs, in a society who doesn't want her to succeed.
